How to analyze on the board
- Make a move. Drag a piece, or tap it and then the target square. Only legal moves play, and every position is analysed the moment it appears.
- Read the arrows. The boldest arrow is the engine's best move; the two lighter ones are its second and third choices. The panel shows each move's evaluation and the line behind it, and clicking a line plays it.
- Walk the line. Step back and forth with the arrow keys or the move list, branch off wherever you like, and flip the board to see it from the other side.

Chess analysis board questions
What is a chess analysis board?
A live board with an engine watching every position. You move the pieces, only legal moves play, and Stockfish 18 immediately shows the three strongest moves as arrows on the board, each with its evaluation and the line that follows. It is the tool players open to dig into an opening, a puzzle or a position from a game.
How do I use the analysis board?
Just move a piece: drag it, or tap the piece and then the target square. The engine starts analysing right away and keeps refining its three candidate moves as it searches deeper. Click any suggestion to play it, use the arrow keys to step back and forth through your moves, and flip the board to look from the other side.
What do the three arrows mean?
They are the engine's three favourite moves in the position on the board. The boldest arrow is the best move; the two lighter ones are the second and third choices. The panel beside the board lists the same moves with their evaluations and continuations, and hovering a line previews just that arrow.
Can I import a game as a PGN?
Yes. Open Import, paste a PGN from chess.com, lichess or anywhere else, and the whole game lands on the board as a line: step through it with the arrows while the engine analyses every position you stop on, or branch off with your own moves. For a scored report with accuracy numbers and move labels, run the game review instead.
Can I set up a specific position?
Yes. Open Import and paste a FEN, or use the position field under the move list, and the board jumps straight to it with the engine analysing from that spot. For building a position piece by piece, or reading one from a screenshot or photo, the next move calculator has a full board editor and scanner.
Can I analyze from the black side?
Yes. The Flip button turns the board around so Black sits at the bottom, and the analysis is unaffected: the engine always evaluates the position itself and suggests the best moves for whoever is to move.
Which engine does the analysis?
Stockfish 18, the strongest open-source chess engine, rated well above 3600. It runs as WebAssembly in your browser, so the analysis is private, there is no queue, and nothing about your position leaves your device.
Is the analysis board free and unlimited?
Completely. The engine runs on your own device, so there is nothing for us to meter: no account, no daily caps, and no premium depth being held back.
