Each board shows the trap at the moment it is set, with the losing move in red. The percentage is how many of the players who reached that position then played the losing move. Counted from rated blitz, rapid and classical games on Lichess (968 million of them reached these positions). Ratings are shown as Chess.com ratings: the games are grouped by Lichess rating, which runs higher, and each group is named by the Chess.com rating it comes to in ChessGoals' comparison of players with an account on both. A rating with fewer than 300 games at a position shows no number.

Chess opening traps

Win games before move ten

A chess opening trap is a run of natural-looking moves that invites a mistake. Your opponent sees a free pawn, a loose piece or an easy check, takes it, and a move or two later is losing a piece, losing the queen or getting checkmated. The traps on this page are the classics: Scholar's Mate, the Fried Liver Attack, Légal's Mate, the Stafford Gambit and twenty-one more, for White and for Black. Each one has a lesson in plain words and a way to practise it against opponents who play the way real players at your level play.

How to learn a chess opening trap

  1. Pick your opponents' rating. The cards reorder, most effective first, because a trap that catches most players rated 800 can catch far fewer at 2000.
  2. Learn it one move at a time. Capra, the Chess411 coach, walks you to the position, shows what players at that rating usually do there, and gives you a move for every reply, including the ones who do not take the bait.
  3. Play it yourself. One opponent for every reply real players at that rating give, the most common first. Spring the trap on the one who falls for it, keep the game level against the ones who do not, and keep score.

Chess opening trap questions

What is a chess opening trap?

A run of opening moves that tempts the opponent into a natural-looking mistake. The bait is usually a free pawn or piece, or a check that looks strong; the punishment is a lost piece, a lost queen or checkmate a few moves later.

What is the best chess opening trap for beginners?

For opponents rated around 800, the traps that catch the most players are the ones where the bait is a free piece: Noah's Ark Trap, the Damiano Defence trap and the Fried Liver Attack each catch well over half of the players who reach the position. Scholar's Mate is the most famous, but far fewer players fall for it, because everyone has seen it. Pick a rating above and the list sorts itself.

Do opening traps work against good players?

Less often, and for some traps much less often. Pick 2000 on the rating picker and the percentages fall, and a few traps show no number at all because almost nobody at that level reaches the position. Against strong players a trap is a bonus, not a plan: play the opening because it is sound, and take the trap only when it is offered.

What happens if my opponent does not fall for the trap?

Every lesson covers that. Some traps cost nothing when declined and leave you a normal position; others, like the Englund Gambit and the Stafford Gambit, leave you a pawn down against careful play. Each trap's page says which under "If they do not bite".

Where do the percentages come from?

From rated blitz, rapid and classical games on Lichess that reached each trap position. The percentage is the share of those games in which the opponent played the losing move. Ratings are shown as Chess.com ratings, converted with ChessGoals' comparison of players who have accounts on both sites. A rating with fewer than 300 games at a position shows no number.

Can I practise the traps?

Yes. Every trap has a Play it yourself page with one opponent for every reply real players at your chosen rating give, the most common first: one takes the bait, the others do not, and you have to find the right moves against each. You keep a score.
