What is chess?

Four things, and then you know what the game is.

  1. Chess is a game for two players. It is played on a board of 64 squares, light and dark, like a checkerboard.

  2. Each player gets 16 pieces, which you will meet in the next lesson. One player has the white pieces, the other has the black pieces. White always moves first.

  3. You take turns. On your turn you move one piece. Then your opponent moves one piece, and so on until the game ends.

  4. Each side has one piece called the king. The whole game is about trapping your opponent's king so that it cannot escape. Do that and you have won.
